Smith was born August 22, 1950, to Bishop Alex J. Smith and the Late Missionary Addie Smith in Goodwin, Arkansas. Walter confessed a hope in Christ at an early age. Walter attended and graduated Class of 1968 from Wheatley High School in Wheatley, AR. Later that year, he enrolled in the Southern Baptist College, now known as, Williams College in Walnut Ridge, AR. He was very active on campus and instrumental in many activities. While in attendance, Walter, his brother Alex Jr, and uncle, Henry Smith founded the Black Renaissance Organization (BRO), a fraternity, and sorority which focused on black awareness and the upward mobility of black people. Till this day this group is still in operation. Walter graduated from Southern Baptist College in 1970 with an Associates Degree. Walter married Victory of June 1973 and to the union he gained two daughters, Yolanda “Wanda” Smith-Dawson and Veronica “Annette” Starks. As he continued in life, he later married Belinda Gentry in 1995, and later the late Diane Moody-Smith March of 1997 gaining three bonus children. Walter showed an interest in cooking as a child and often assisted his mother in making the family meals. Until his passing he would often prepare meals for family members, and for Bishop and Missionary Smith when they return from Church meetings and on holidays. He was a really good gardener who you could always count on for some greens, tomatoes and other vegetables. He also loved working on cars and was employed over the course of many years. While residing in Little Rock, he was employed by Gene Rush Garage, J&H Body Shop, West Paint & Body Shop, and Porter’s Paint & Body Shop. He later relocated to West Helena, AR where he was employed at the West Horner Motor Company for a period of time. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman, he was very skilled in many areas. Walter departed this life for eternity, Sunday, July 4, 2021. Walter was proceeded in death by his mother, Missionary Addie M. Smith, a brother, Alex J. Smith Jr, a wife, Diane Moody Smith. Walter leaves to cherish his memories and carry on his legacy his father, Bishop Alex J. Smith, Sr (Missy Clinton) of Helena, AR; two daughters, Yolanda “Wanda” Smith-Dawson (Scott) of Little Rock, AR, Veronica “Annette” Starks (Darryal) of Olive Branch, MS; six grandchildren, Walter L. Smith, Rashada “Ski” Pruitt, Mariah Ferrari (Nicholas), Di’Arica “DK” Washington, Alexia Starks, Darryal Starks, Jr; two great-grandchildren, Ayden Ferrari and Xavier Ferrari; 8 brothers, Carl Smith (Doris), Clarence “CJ” Smith (Rochelle), Ricky Smith (Laura), Roger Smith (Evelyn), Ronnie Smith (Marilyn), Bennie Smith, Kim Smith (Barbara), and Kevin Maxey (Angela); 5 sisters, Larieter Payne (Curtis), Janie Thomas, Debra White, Paula Hannah (Rockridge), and Patricia Dixon (Hosea), and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
